Everybody Loves Steve Spurrier! Gushing #TheBeliever Tweets Punctuate HBC Love Fest

Full disclosure: I’m a big South Carolina fan—and an even bigger Steve Spurrier fan

That being said, it should come as no surprise that the SEC Network documentary The Believer, which chronicles the very charmed life of the HBC, was well received in my home. I was, however, a bit surprised at just how well received film was received by those commenting on Twitter.

I’ve been live tweeting games and miscellaneous sporting events for years now and I don’t think I’ve ever seen something with such a universally positive reaction. People weren’t just enjoying the documentary, they used it as an excuse to spend 90 minutes worshipping at the altar of all things Spurrier.

For a brief moment Duke, Florida, and South Carolina fans united under a common God. And Kenny Chesney too! The singer-turned-director is not just the HBC’s friend, he’s also his No. 1 fanboy.

How else can you explain the last 20 minutes of the film, which consisted of players and colleagues, past and present, gathered in a circle on the field at Williams-Brice Stadium, pelting Spurrier with compliments? Each compliment more gushing than the one before it.

Spurrier basked in the compliments and the praise, often nodding his head in agreement, as if they were reading a page from his own playbook. It was truly fantastic.

And, like I said, I’m not the only one who thought so. Here are some of the best tweets from the broadcast:

Screen Shot 2014-08-27 at 10.15.39 PMFirst of all, this is the most negative comment out of the hundreds that I perused. And it’s actually true—HBC can gut a deer with nothing more than a few biting off the cuff remarks.

Moving on.

This is me. I was really excited.

Screen Shot 2014-08-27 at 10.14.17 PMTommy Madden knows what I’m talking about.

This is no small accomplishment. In my experience, Gamecocks fans are some of the most cynical, self-loathing naysayers in college football.

Sometimes an emoji is worth 1,000 words. In this case, 4,000.

See what I mean? People were literally saluting Spurrier’s existence on this planet and the SEC Network for honoring the aforementioned existence.
Lol. That was solid, Spurrier’s Swag…that was solid.

Tree branch in my eye tears are the most legit of all the tears.

This is true. I was surprised as anyone when Spurrier came to South Carolina.

If Douglas Adams is anything like me, and I suspect that he is, anything less than infinity running time wouldn’t have been enough.
As much as I love him, this might be the first time I’ve ever heard Spurrier referred to as a “class act.” I guess I know too many Clemson fans.

This one is the second most negative tweet of the evening, and it’s still complimentary.

#HBCMVP! Let’s make this happen. MVP of what, you ask? I don’t even care. It’s the best thing I’ve seen ever.

How could you not get the feels? Mr. and Mrs. Spurrier are the greatest love story of all time.

This is me again. Spurrier has been dogged about his brief stint in the NFL, but I think history has redeemed him. Perhaps his methods don’t suit the professional level, but he had as much success as anyone in Washington since Snyder doomed the franchise.

I did all three of those things too. I also high-fived a lot.

Kylie Murphy is lucky. Usually flying that close to the sun ends poorly.
He’s right. Spurrier picked the wrong franchise to get in bed with.

Chuck Hoskins must have been an absolute mess after 90 minutes. God love him.

Me again. And so true. I’ve loved Steve Spurrier since his days at Florida, despite hating Florida, and there’s nothing I love more about him than how delightfully mean he can be.

Seems to be the general sentiment.
Goosebumps!

Chill bumps! I think they’re the same as goosebumps, but I’m not totally sure.

The real loser tonight was Will Muschamp.

They couldn’t. Twitter has proved it.

Courtney Charroux is right. It was clear from a very early age that HBC was Godlike.
#WeCocky isn’t South Carolina’s best rallying cry. Just saying.

Yes. Yes it was.
Screen Shot 2014-08-27 at 10.15.36 PMI couldn’t have said it any better myself.

And on that note, South Carolina opens up the season against a Johnny Manziel-less Texas A&M on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.

Be there…or be stupid.
