When Kyle Shanahan officially becomes head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, his father’s input will be heard. Still, Mike Shanahan will hold no official role with the team.

The two Shanahan’s worked together from 2010-13 with the Washington Redskins. There, Mike was the head coach and his son, Kyle, workded under his father as the offensive coordinator.

A father working his son would be rare, but also not unprecedented. Monte Kiffin served as defensive coordinator for his son Lane at the University of Tennessee in 2009 and at USC from 2010-2012.

Still, having a family member as a subordinate is awkward. On occasion, a head coach may need to yell (or even fire) someone on his staff. If that someone is a family member — especially a father — it becomes even more of a challenge.

The elder Shanahan is familiar with the 49ers organization. He was San Francisco’s offensive coordinator from 1992-94, helping the team win Super Bowl XXIX. As head coach of the Denver Broncos, he also coached new 49ers’ general manager John Lynch from 2004-07.

With Lynch as the general manager and his son manning the sidelines, it only makes sense that Mike will have input, even if it’s only unofficial.
