NFL Rumors: Redskins ‘Have Had Trade’ Talks Involving Robert Griffin III

Back in 2012, the Washington Redskins rolled the dice in the NFL Draft by making a risky trade to move up to the second overall pick. The Redskins used the pick to draft quarterback Robert Griffin III out of Baylor and as a result the team seemed to have found their new face of the franchise.

After an incredible rookie season, Griffin had burst on the scene as a legitimate star. A Pro Bowl selection and propelling Washington back into the playoffs was enough to turn heads in Washington, but since then it has been nonstop injuries and seemingly endless controversy surrounding the young quarterback.

Griffin’s stint with the Redskins may be coming to an end with the team rumored to be involving the former Heisman trophy winner in trade talks, according to Dianna Russini and Adam Schefter of ESPN:

High-ranking Washington Redskins front-office officials and coaches want to part ways with quarterback Robert Griffin III, but are meeting resistance from team ownership, according to team and league sources.

The Redskins even have had trade conversations about Griffin with a handful of NFL teams, but have found no interest, and it remains unclear whether ownership would allow Washington to trade him, sources said.

On Saturday, the news broke of the Redskins coaching staff planning on starting quarterback Kirk Cousins in Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins, via ESPN:

The Redskins are planning on starting Kirk Cousins at quarterback in their regular-season opener against the Dolphins, sources told ESPN’s Dianna Russini.

Griffin suffered concussion-like systems 10 days ago paving the way for Cousins to take his starting job. Cousins, and Colt McCoy for that matter, have been on the cusp of unseating Griffin for quite some time and now the Baylor product could be headed to the bench or headed elsewhere in a trade.

It seems at this point Griffin causes more harm than good in Washington. He can’t stay healthy and is always a distraction off the field as a constant focus of the media. The Redskins brass may have had enough and if they find the right deal it won’t be all that surprising to see him shipped out before Week 1.
