The face of the New Orleans Saints franchise is not getting treated as a such. One-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Drew Brees may not be getting any younger, but the veteran quarterback can still play with the best of them. Unfortunately, the Saints aren’t making an effort to sign him to a contract extension.

Apparently, New Orleans hasn’t talked about a contract extension with Brees for quite some time. Brees recently spoke about not getting a new deal done and being confused as to why, via ESPN’s Mike Triplett:

“Not sure why things have not progressed,” said Brees, who is heading into the final year of his contract. “They made an offer in March, we made an offer shortly thereafter. And besides the Josh Norman deal [when the Saints approached Brees about restructuring his contract to try to fit the star cornerback under their salary cap], there has been no talk about a contract since.”

At 37, Brees’ best football might be behind him. Although Brees is in his late 30s, the veteran gunslinger rarely missing games and is still a force to be reckoned with under center. Brees is coming off another solid season with 4,870 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, and only 11 interceptions.

Despite Brees still being able to play at a high level while also remaining healthy, the Saints brass may be thinking about heading in another direction in the near future. Signing Brees to another long-term contract may not be in their plans hence the hesitation or lack of urgency in re-signing him ahead of his last season under contract.

Brees may not have an extension in place right now, but there’s still some time to get it done. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Brees inks a new deal before the start of next season.
