San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers Agrees To 4-Year Contract Extension

With the future of the San Diego Chargers franchise uncertain due to the possible relocation to Los Angeles, veteran quarterback Philip Rivers staying with the team long-term seemed to be up in the air. It had been rumored that Rivers wasn’t fond of the idea of living in Los Angeles and as a result would leave the team in one way or another. That doesn’t seem to matter anymore.

According to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com, Rivers has agreed to a contract extension with the Chargers:

The team announced that Rivers agreed to a four-year extension on Saturday night that will keep him under contract through 2019. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Rivers’ extension includes $83.25 million in new money, with $65 million in guarantees. The news wraps up a rollercoaster offseason for Rivers that included some trade rumors and ambivalent statements about his future.

Now that Rivers is under contract for the next four years, it doesn’t really matter what his preference is moving forward. Rivers may have told the Chargers brass that he’s comfortable with the situation even if he’s playing in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future after this season.

As of right now, there’s still no telling whether the Chargers will relocate or end up staying in San Diego long-term. The Chargers, St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders are the three teams most likely to make the move to Los Angeles. No team has emerged as the frontrunner and all three making the move to Los Angeles isn’t beyond the realm of possibility, but if the Chargers do move, it’s likely they’ll share a stadium with the divisional rival Raiders in Carson.
