The Buffalo Bills are underwent drastic changes to during this NFL offseason with a new head coach and some big moves that may propel the team back into the playoff hunt next season. Arguably the two biggest moves made by the Bills involved acquired star running back LeSean McCoy from the Philadelphia Eagles and bringing in head coach Rex Ryan, but there’s plenty of question marks that remain in terms of the quarterback position.

Back in 2013, the Bills drafted EJ Manuel out of Florida State with the 16th pick in the NFL Draft. Manuel was thought to be the future face of the franchise, but things haven’t panned out as they hoped it would with the young quarterback.

Along with the additions of Ryan and McCoy, the Bills tried to address the quarterback situation by bringing in Matt Cassel formerly of the Minnesota Vikings. Although Cassel isn’t considered to be a game-changer for the Bills, the team hoped it would bring some stability to the position with Manuel having some competition to win the starting job.

Unfortunately, Cassel may not even make the final roster, according to ESPN’s Mike Rodak:

“I went into OTAs thinking Cassel had the best chance to be the opening day starter, given his level of experience, but I now question if he will make the roster. The Bills can wipe his $4.15 million base salary off the books if they release him prior to the start of the regular season, an appealing option if Cassel’s struggles continue into training camp.”

With Cassel clearly struggling to even win a roster spot at this point, the Bills could be in a lot of trouble at the quarterback position with the start of the season only few months away. It would be all that surprising to see Buffalo bring in another veteran quarterback if Cassel doesn’t pan out.

There are a few veteran quarterbacks still available on the open market that might intrigue Buffalo. Michael Vick, one of Ryan’s former quarterbacks with the New York Jets, is still on the open market as well as former Bill, Kyle Orton.
