Eagles acquire running back D’Andre Swift in trade with Lions

After falling short of winning the Super Bowl, the Eagles are retooling the roster to make another championship push.

The Eagles added another potential key piece on Saturday after acquiring running back D’Andre Swift from the Detroit Lions. Philadelphia traded a 2025 fourth-round selection and a 2023 seventh-round pick in exchange for Swift and a 2023 seventh-round pick.

The Georgia product should quickly become a key factor in the Eagles’ high-powered offense as potentially the starting running back. He’s proven to be a dual-threat option after posting 542 rushing yards on 99 attempts for 5.5 yards per carry along with 48 receptions for 389 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s got big-play ability as a runner and a receiver,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said on ESPN’s draft broadcast via ESPN. “We saw it firsthand when we were in Detroit the first game of the season [in 2022].”

Swift is heading into the final year of his four-year, $8.5 million rookie contract.

The Eagles had a significant hole to fill in the backfield after Miles Sanders’ departure in free agency on a four-year, $25.4 million deal with the Carolina Panthers.

Swift will compete for playing time against Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott, and fellow offseason addition Rashaad Penny. The Eagles will continue to depend heavily on the running behind star quarterback Jalen Hurts, who inked a five-year, $255 million extension earlier this month.

The Eagles remain the favorites to make a run toward another Super Bowl appearance next season.
